About
Mission & vision
What we are trying to do, what we are trying to build, and the rules we hold ourselves to while we do it.
Our mission
To deliver medical care, recovery support and meaningful work to veterans and neighbors experiencing homelessness in the St. Louis region — inside their circumstances rather than above them, and for as long as recovery actually takes.
Our vision
A St. Louis where no veteran’s health collapses because of where they sleep, and where the distance between a housing placement and real medical care is zero.
Our values
Five rules we do not bend
We start by believing you
We do not require people to prove their pain before we take it seriously. We start by believing, and then we measure — because you deserve both.
We treat the situation, not the slice
Housing, trauma, pain, metabolism and addiction are not separate queues. We treat the whole situation or we are not really treating anything.
We do not overstate what we do
Our street outreach delivers basic first aid. It is not a mobile clinic and we will never describe it as one. Overselling help is its own kind of harm.
We measure, and we publish the source
Every clinical claim we make in public carries its citation. If we cannot source it, we do not say it.
We give it time
A prairie’s first year looks like failure. So does much of recovery. We do not reach for the mower.
What this rules out
A mission statement that does not exclude anything is decoration. Ours excludes real things, and we would rather say so plainly:
- We do not provide emergency or trauma care. We are not an emergency department and cannot function as one. In an emergency, call 911.
- We do not prescribe our way around circumstances. If someone’s health is failing because they are sleeping outside, the prescription is not the intervention — it is at best one part of it.
- We do not treat opioid-seeking as a business line. Our clinical leadership’s practice is built on reducing opioid burden, not extending it.
- We do not promise outcomes we cannot evidence. Where the research is a pilot, we say pilot. Where a study was not done in veterans, we say so.
Fund the work
Every dollar goes into clinical care, recovery support and vocational training for people who have run out of options.
